Two ICSL’s Papers Won Prizes in 24th Samsung Human-Tech Paper Award

 

Two ICSL’s students (Advisor: Jaehyouk Choi) have been recognized for their excellence in academic and research work at the 24th Annual International Samsung Human-Tech Paper Awards, held on February 6th, 2018. Yongsun Lee and Heein Yoon received the Bronze prize and the Honor prize, respectively in the field of Circuit Design.

 

Yongsun Lee received the Bronze prize in the field of Circuit Design with the research named, “A -242dB FOM and -75dBc-Reference-Spur Ring-DCO Based All-Digital PLL Using a Fast Phase-Error Correction Technique”. In his paper, he proposes an all-digital phase-locked loop (ADPLL) with a fast-phase error correction (FPEC) technique and a novel calibration method to overcome major drawbacks of conventional ring-oscillator-based clock generators. Using the proposed techniques, this work achieved the world-best noise performance.

 

Heein Yoon received the Honor prize in the field of Circuit Design with the research on “A −31dBc Integrated-Phase-Noise 29GHz Fractional-N Frequency Synthesizer for Backward-Compatible 5G Transceivers”. In her work, she presents a multi-band LO-generator that can support existing cellular bands below 6GHz and new millimeter-wave (mmW) bands for 5G, concurrently. Among the state-of-the-art mm-band clock generators, this work achieved the lowest noise performance.

Established in 1994, this competition recognizes an elite cadre of creative young researchers who through competition have demonstrated excellence in research. In this year, out of 1,956 excellent papers considered from high schools and universities, only 120 papers (80 from universities and 40 from high schools) were selected to receive the awards.
